What does applying Global Goals actually mean for Businesses?

What does applying Global Goals actually mean for businesses?

A few days ago, someone in my business network commented under a post of mine, which was a link to my latest Amazon International Bestseller ‘How to apply Global goals to Your Business; ‘ The #1 Guide to becoming Greener, Leaner, and more Profitable by applying the 17 Sustainable Development Goals’.

What I quickly realized was that he misunderstood the meaning of ‘Global Goals’, based on his comment, which was “I don’t apply global goals. They’re totally irrelevant to my very local business of photography. I need people to be with me. Not on the other side of the world. Otherwise how do I take their photos?” (see below).

What he meant was internationalization, which in short refers to trading abroad.

GlobalGoalsConversation Sensored Naomi Mc Laughlan

That’s, of cause, not meant when looking at Global Goals, but instead it is the common term most people use to refer to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (aka Global Goals or SDGs).

My main thought was, ‘Wow! There are still business owners who don’t know anything about Global Goals and how to apply them to their business, hence take neither ownership, leadership nor value the opportunity that presents itself.

By the way, this post is not meant to name and shame anyone, hence why I covered the persons name. It is rather a realization what still needs to be done; which is to spread the word about the necessity and opportunity of applying Global Goals.

Learning about the Global Goals, yet still considering that only multinational enterprises should concern themselves with the topic at hand, is in my opinion a failure.

We are ALL in this together!!! We all have the responsibility, especially as business owners, big and small, as well as as citizens in our communities alike. And, NO, we don’t have to try to apply ALL 17 SDGs, but rather make an informed choice based on what applies to our business or living environment, business aims and practical considerations. It is a matter of Pick & Choose – Then consistently APPLY.

There are many great examples, of businesses who apply Global Goals, which show leadership roles in their industries, hence this reflects positively back how consumers perceive their efforts. Meanwhile it raises standards and improves our lives on a society level, as well as has a considerable positive impact on the environment .  Even small scale projects can make a huge difference for the people involved, from the free meal for a homeless person, beach clean-ups or providing free education or medicine to war torn countries and everything in between. Applying Global Goals starts at home, hence why any business can get involved and make a difference.

Make more profit by spending less

Increase profits Naomi Mc Laughlan

Whether you are in start-up or growth mode, as an entrepreneur or business owner your aim will be the same; increase profits and reduce expenses. Therefore, it is always a wise strategy to consider, analyse and monitor all overhead costs, especially the ones that reoccur on a regular basis, as they can amount to a significant sum over time.

Spend less on Overheads Top 5 List:

  1. Plan ahead and buy in bulk, including office supplies, raw or component materials used to produce your products, as larger orders mean you shop less, often at a lower price and pay only once for shipping
  2. Clean up and update your mailing list on a regular basis; if you use direct mail make sure that you are not sending out marketing copy that reaches no one
  3. Collaborate and hire independent freelancers and / or manufacturers’ sales reps; because they get paid on a fixed rate or commission only, which is less expensive, as compared to employing permanent staff – However, one downside might be that you are not actively building an organisational culture by training and retaining a talented, motivated and happy workforce.
  4. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle or Upcycle equipment; by planning ahead and using estimates of current and future requirements you can ensure that when replacing appliances or other equipment you do not outgrow these before their lifetime, hence it reduces the number of times you have to replace them. Furthermore, consider to reuse equipment or re-purpose them, and / or sell them on to reinvest into new equipment.
  5. Go paperless; it is better for the environment and your purse, so for example use emails to send out letters, offers and invoices and make use of digital and mobile marketing strategies that won’t cost you a dime and can go #viral

How to make your own font – Learn from my mistakes

How to make your own font Naomi Mc Laughlan

I have created my own handwritten font, for a project to promote the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and I wanted to craft something truly unique. The project involved the design of a collection of eco-friendly Tees, which are made from 100% Cotton and Bamboo, they are available in my Tee Collection.

To create the font, I have used a free online tool from Myscriptfont.

Tip: Make sure to write carefully within the outlined boxes and use a pen that does not bleed into the paper. – If you watch the clip, you understand why 😉

In the following video tutorial, you can watch how I tried, failed and finally made my own font.

Quick & Easy Vegan Family Lunch

Spinach and Veg Naomi Mc Laughlan.gif

I enjoy trying out new recipes on a regular basis, as eating the ‘same-old-same-old’ becomes ever so boring. Often this is inspired by what is left in the fridge or freezer, in which case I either quickly google a recipe in terms of the main ingredient or I just make something up.

The following recipe is an outcome of my latest ‘trial-and-see approach’, which turned out to be very delicious. My three kids have also enjoyed it, which in our household means a lot; as they can be quiet fussy at times!

So I hope you will enjoy it too!

Spinach, Veg & Meat Ball Medley

500g Whole Leaf Spinach

5 Tomatoes (washed, and diced)

1 Leak (washed and cut into rings)

½ Red Onion (washed and cut into rings)

400g Vegan Meat Balls (Soya based)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Dark Soy Sauce

Black Pepper

Instructions

Step 1

Sprinkle the olive oil in a large pan and when it is hot add the onions and leak to it. Fry for ca. 2-3 minutes until they become soft and a little brown.

Step 2

Add the tomatoes and spinach to the onion mix and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Then add the soya sauce and pepper to your taste.

Step 3

Heat up the Vegan Meat Balls by adding them to the vegetable mix for ca. 5-8 minutes.

Step 4

Serve with Basmati Rice or Brown Rice

Bon appetite!

Let me what you think!
